SUMMARY:The Great Irish Famine by Mylo Miller
DESCRIPTION:Mylo Miller\, a staff member at Johnstown Castle\, has been working on a new museum exhibition titled “Changing Farming Fortunes”. \nThe exhibition traces Ireland’s agricultural history from the Great Irish Famine through to modern times\, highlighting Johnstown Castle’s role during the Famine and the later impact of Teagasc in advancing Irish farming practices. \nAs part of this project\, Mylo has created an illustrated talk\, “The Great Irish Famine”\, based on his in-depth research into this tragic period. The talk explores why Ireland’s poorest communities were the most vulnerable\, examines the causes of the Famine\, and describes the harsh and often devastating conditions endured by much of the population. \nWhile Wexford is often considered to have escaped the worst effects of the Famine\, the presentation will use the Wexford Workhouse as a case study to demonstrate the significant hardship faced by many poorer families. \nIt will also discuss the role of Hamilton Knox Grogan Morgan\, Resident Landlord of the Johnstown Castle Estate during the Famine years. \nFollowing the talk\, attendees will be invited to join Mylo for a short guided tour of the new Changing Farming Fortunes exhibition.

SUMMARY:Imelda's Valentine's Concert
DESCRIPTION:Imelda Kehoe is known for her distinctive voice\, story-telling and blend of jazz and soul and has been described as ‘one of the finest Irish contemporary  songwriters to emerge in recent years’.  \nAnd because Imelda treats a song as an emotional whole and can capture the joyful essence of what it feels like to love and be loved\, it follows that she is the perfect fit for the annual Jazz at Johnstown Valentine’s concert on Saturday\, February 14th. \nImelda’s performance in the Ballroom alongside pianist Killian Browne was one of the highlights of the 2025 Jazz at Johnstown Festival. Killian’s mastery of the piano helped Imelda capture the gorgeous essence of classic songs like God Only Knows. \nKillian joins Imelda’s quartet on February 14th for an evening of romance\, jazz style: you will find nothing is quite as seductive as the bluesy timbre of Imelda’s voice weaving silken phrases to make the heart sing.

SUMMARY:Christmas Jazz at Johnstown Castle
DESCRIPTION:Many Christmas jazz classics were written in America in the 1940s\, a period which also gave birth to the American crooner\, performers who could exude an effortlessly cool swagger. \nVery quickly\, these iconic crooners became renowned for their  Christmas songs and their music of choice to emphasise the yuletide spirit was more often than not\, cool jazz. \nThe type of jazz\, as temperatures drop and days grow short\, in which festive melodies marry perfectly with the instrumentation and style of a tight quartet. None come tighter than this year’s Jazz at Johnstown Christmas act: the Cormac Kenevey Quartet. \nCormac\, who guested last year with the RTE Concert Orchestra at the Christmas Miscellany at the National Concert Hall\, has a winning way with a song which reminds us of the effortless cool of singers like Tony Bennett\, caressing a festive lyric comfortably to make it his own. \nCormac is backed by one of the hottest jazz trios in the business: Johnny Taylor on piano; Conor Murry on drums and Dave Redmond on bass. \nSo\, you better watch out and not miss out\, the lush baritone of Cormac Kenevey is coming to town on Friday\, December 12\, at 8 p.m. \nTickets: €25 for Non Members & €22.50 for IHT MembersVenue: Johnstown Castle\, Visitor Centre \nGet your tickets now and make this Christmas memorable with an evening of classic jazz. \n\n\n***Doors open at 7:30pm***

SUMMARY:Iron Men\, Wexford's Lockout 1911 - 1912
DESCRIPTION:A talk will be given at Johnstown Castle by Mylo Miller Titled: Iron Men\, Wexford’s lockout 1911 – 1912. Mylo works for the Irish Heritage Trust at Johnstown Castle Estate\, Irish Agricultural Museum and Gardens. Mylo was the curator on an exhibition for the museum which tells the story of Wexford’s Lockout. The research for the project evolved into this stirring new talk about Wexford’s 1911 Lockout. \nThe 1911 lockout with its Police violence\, imported blacklegs\, clerical condemnation and heroic working-class resistance would prove to be a forerunner to Dublin’s more famous 1913 lockout. The talk gives an insight into the foundry workers’ right to join a union. \nTheir struggle was not over wages or conditions; rather it was over their right to combine under the banner of the Larkinite vehicle the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union (ITGWU). It examines the background\, events and aftermath of a conflict that would help prepare both James Larkin and James Connolly for the events that were to occur during Dublin’s 1913 Lockout.

SUMMARY:From the Seashore and Other Stories
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of watercolours – By Maria Murphy \nA collection of watercolours inspired by the flotsam and jetsam found on the foreshore\, exploring how discarded manmade objects become part of the natural landscape. As well as a selection of more traditional landscapes \nFriday 18th April to Friday 25th April in the Visitor Centre\, Johnstown Castle Estate. \nAbout the artist \n“My name is Maria Murphy\, I’m a watercolour landscape artist from the model county of Wexford. I grew up in the countryside of Wexford and spent my time exploring the nooks and crannies of the wild scenes that were on my doorstep. As I’ve grown older\, I have continued these adventures as an artist and am rarely without my camera and sketchbook to capture the beauty around me. \nFrom childhood I’ve had a keen interest in painting and drawing. I’ve explored many mediums\, but watercolour is the one that caught and held my interest and captured my heart. I’m self-taught as an artist and have been using watercolours for over twenty years. I feel that watercolour allows me to accurately capture the subjects that most interest me like old\, dilapidated buildings and the intricacies of the rocky seashore. \nThe seashore in particular is the subject on which many of my paintings are based exploring the tiny hidden world between the rocks. Plus the relationship between the discarded manmade items and the natural pebbles\, driftwood and shells. I am fascinated by the impact that we as humans impact on the landscape that surrounds us.”
